The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced Monday, April 30, that a new online feature allows veterans to access their own medical images and any associated reports.

The feature, called VA Medical Images and Reports, is accessible through the My HealtheVet patient portal. Veterans with a premium account can view x-rays, mammograms, MRIs, CTs and more directly from their electronic health record. Studies can also be downloaded and shared.

“With VA Medical Images and Reports, patients have the option of obtaining their images and reports online, eliminating the need to visit a VA facility to acquire a copy of their information,” Robert Wilkie, VA acting secretary, said in a prepared statement.

Studies should be available after three calendar days. To view DICOM images, veterans have the option of installing a free image viewer on their computer.
